As you probably know‚ cancer can spread from where it originally began to other parts of the body‚ despite treatment. This process is called metastasis (muh–TASS–tuh–sis). Cells from the original tumor break away‚ travel through the bloodstream or other paths‚ and attack another site. Tumors that grow at the new location are not new cancers but an extension of the original cancer. These new tumors (more than one) are called metastases.
